Trimming down after the holidays? The government-approved DASH diet is the best for both health and weight loss, according to U.S. News & World Report.

DASH emphasizes fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, fish, poultry and whole grains — and skipping salt. It allows only a teaspoon of sodium a day and would like eaters to wean themselves to even less than that over time.
